Janet is a dedicated and highly organized legal professional, development practitioner and design thinking coach with 15 years’ experience working in litigation, development programming, legal advisory, legal and policy research and analysis and design thinking facilitation. She is known for her exceptional skills in legislative review, contract reviews, prosecution, legal writing and presentation and leading the development, engagement and implementation of programs focusing on human rights, justice and rule of law, democratic and social accountability, anti-corruption, policing and child protection.

She possesses skills in monitoring and evaluation, conducting organizational legal risk analysis and management, conducting human rights due diligence checks, conducting security and justice assessments, human rights situation analysis, statutory audits and legal compliance checks.

Janet has also consulted on assignments requiring legal review and analysis, legal drafting, engagement and negotiations and extensive report writing. She has the capacity to and has managed and lead on complex and time sensitive assignments while balancing multiple interests.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from the University of Malawi and a Master of Laws in International Development, Law and Human Rights from the University of Warwick She is admitted to practice law in Malawi and confidently litigates in the Supreme Court, High Court and Subordinate courts in the following areas of law among others, criminal law, commercial law, employment law, procurement law, family law and constitutional and administrative law.

Some of her key achievements include drafting UNCT confidential submission to the Committee on child rights on the implementation of the CRC in Malawi and its optional protocol for the combined second, third and fourth state party report for 2017 dialogue session; Review of the Seed Act; Part of the team that drafted the National Children Commission Bill; and Part of the team that assessed the openness of public contracting in Malawi on behalf of HIVOS.

Janet has also served as Vice-chairperson of the board of the National Aids Commission and Board Chairperson of the National Youth Council of Malawi. In 2021, Courtroom Mail listed her among the top 100 female lawyers in Africa.
